Residents and staff at Acts Lima Estates are turning winter into a season of movement, motivation, and friendly competition.
Led by Lima Estates' Fitness Program Manager Rachel Bunting, Lima's annual Virtual Walk Challenge invites residents and team members to log activity miles while “traveling” the Great American Rail Trail from Washington, D.C., to Washington State and back again. Now in its second year, the 13-week challenge runs from early November through February, with nearly 70 participants breaking a sweat and staying connected during the coldest months of the year.
Each week, the fitness team shares progress updates, photos, videos, and fun facts about locations along the real-world trail, highlighting how former rail lines have been transformed into accessible pathways through the Rails to Trails Conservancy. A communal map tracks the teams’ journey and celebrates milestones along the way.

The success of the Virtual Walk Challenge reflects Lima Estates’ commitment to personalized fitness, creative motivation, and community connection — values shared across all our Acts communities. And judging by the enthusiasm in Lima, virtual trails may continue inspiring seniors to stay active all year long.
