Local World War II veterans recall their memories of D-Day

D-Day is the day hundreds of thousands of US and ally troops landed in Normandy, France to fight Nazi Germany. It is estimated that nearly 10,000 allied soldiers were killed, wounded, or went missing during the attack.

CLOSE For decades, the chilling stories of D-Day have served as a reminder of the sacrifices of the men and women who played a role in shaping America's history. Seventy-five year after that day, the stories may be less easy to come by, but for those who served in World War II, they are easier to recall than they would like.

As Allied Forces began the D-Day invasion to liberate Europe on June 6, 1944, Charley Pritchett was preparing to make some history of his own. "Everybody - from children to grandparents - you had this feeling of country and the feeling that you wanted to serve," the 92-year-old World War II veteran told The Stream.
