Will Medicare or Medicaid help cover any of the costs of a retirement community?

In most cases, Medicare or Medicaid will not help cover costs of a retirement community. Though there are important distinctions.

  • Medicare does not cover independent living or assisted living costs. It may cover short-term, medically necessary skilled nursing or rehabilitation following a hospital stay, under specific conditions.
  • Medicaid generally does not cover independent living. In some states, it may help with certain long-term skilled nursing costs for those who qualify financially and medically, but it does not cover entrance fees or most monthly living expenses.

CCRCs like Acts Retirement-Life Communities allow residents to plan ahead and enjoy predictable costs, housing, services, and access to care. The value lies in having a long-term plan in place—rather than relying on public programs that offer limited coverage.
