What are the reasons not to move into a CCRC?
CCRCs are not the right fit for everyone. Here are some common reasons a person may choose not to move into a CCRC (continuing care retirement community), and why thoughtful consideration matters:
- Upfront Financial Commitment - CCRCs typically require an entrance fee, which may not align with every financial situation or estate plan.
- Preference to Stay at Home - Some seniors strongly prefer to age in place or remain close to a longtime neighborhood or family home.
- Reluctance to Plan Far Ahead - CCRCs are best suited for those who value long-term planning and predictability.
- Limited Availability or Location Fit - CCRCs are not located everywhere, and a desired community or floor plan may have a waitlist.
Choosing a CCRC is a personal decision. It’s most beneficial for those who value planning ahead, community, and access to future care. Reasons to move into a CCRC are to enjoy the many benefits and amenities of independent living now, while knowing that a portion of any future health needs have already been paid, so if you or a spouse ever need a higher level of care, you won’t need to move campuses or experience an increase in monthly costs.
