Gwen keeps busy walking, participating in numerous community activities, and inviting friends over to enjoy her unique candle collection. A resident of Normandy Farms for almost five years, she toured several Acts’ communities before she found the home she loves. “Their mission here is to make us happy.”

Miles and Wendy, Matthews Glen

Miles and Wendy have danced together for over forty years. When they moved to Matthews Glen in 2024, they were delighted by the greenway, the gorgeous campus, and the limitless activities that put a spring in their step both on and off the dance floor. “There is always something to enjoy.”

Orval, Lanier Village Estates

Orval thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2017 after he retired. He enjoys the lush Southern Appalachian trails not far from Lanier Village Estates, where he’s lived since 2013. He plans on hiking as long as he can. “Living at Lanier Village gives me the freedom to do what I want to do and not worry about what might go wrong when I’m on my next hike.”

Margo’s green thumb keeps her closely connected to beauty throughout the seasons at The Evergreens. Since moving into the community, she’s stayed busy helping manage a garden that produces delicious things to eat as well as brightly colored blooms. “Great tasting vegetables come from terrific soil. I love tucking in our beds for their winter sleep.”

Allen, Buckingham's Choice

Allen hadn’t played ball in years when he moved into Fairhaven twenty years ago. But after he moved in, the lure of nearby ballfields and a new generation of ballplayers brought him back to the diamond. For nineteen seasons now, he’s helped mentor countless young umpires while rediscovering the thrill of the game.

John, Gwynedd Estates

John describes himself as Gwynedd Estate’s resident wacko. But there’s more to him than a great sense of humor and a taste for the zany. A longtime physician, he briefly came out of retirement to treat patients during COVID. Since then, he’s been making new friends with his neighbors, playing golf, and exploring his Scottish heritage.

Gary, Normandy Farms Estates

Gary has a song or two up his sleeve. A dedicated classic rock fan, he was flattered when a friend approached him about starting a band. Retirement has made it a little easier to book gigs, and he plays out regularly at a local pub and on campus at Normandy Farms, where he lives with his wife, Ginny. “It is really so easy to be happy here.”

Miles, Westminster Village

Miles and his wife Linda, are both artists. She is a painter. He builds model ships. Since moving to Azalea Trace, they’ve found the space to explore their interests, take up new activities, and make friends. “This place is perfect for us. We’re able to create our art at the same time.”

Kathryn, Bayleigh Chase

Kathryn was a poet, memoirist, and English professor before she retired with her husband, Clinton, to Bayleigh Chase. Since moving in, she’s been helping her new friends and neighbors turn their memories into literature with regular workshops and literary activities. “It’s amazing what you can discover when you give yourself over to trying something new.”

Ken, Lanier Village Estates

Ken loves being on a bicycle. And the extensive trails and scenic byways in and around Lake Lanier Village give him a chance to get in gear whenever he likes. Since moving in with his wife, Samantha in 2020, he’s found a community as friendly and active as he is. “This place is wonderful. We have friends here. Why wait?”

Mary, Fairhaven

Mary and her husband, George, can often be found in the woodshop at Fairhaven. They’ve been regulars since they moved in back in 2021. Both enjoy making beautiful things and finding inspiration on long walks through the trails of the park-like grounds surrounding their home. “You could spend days exploring this campus and always find something new.”

Farrow is a celebrated painter, author, and fly maker who has been honored with teaching grants from NC Arts. He brought his unique talents and expertise to Tryon Estates in 2024 and has impressed his new friends and neighbors with his skill and enthusiasm.

Bud and Ron, Spring House Estates

Bud and Ron don’t run the woodshed at Springhouse Estates, but they might be its unofficial ambassadors. Between Burt’s delicately constructed dollhouses and Ron’s expertly carved ducks, they are always working on something impressive and willing to share their knowledge and friendship with their fellow residents.

Maryanna, Brittany Point Estates

Maryanna has never been afraid of trying something new. She took up tap-dancing after she retired, and steel drums after moving into Brittany Pointe Estates. These days, she leads to “Panhandlers” in regular rehearsals and performances on campus and spends time with her many friends. “My motto is: have fun.”

Barbara lives her life as if it were a work of art. Whether it’s one of her magnificent abstract paintings and drawings or her eclectically-appointed apartment at Brittany Pointe Estates, her talents are manifest. She shows regularly in greater Philadelphia in New York and fills her days with warm friendships and brilliant strokes of color.

Mailand has been making art since the first grade, and teaching and doing so professionally for most of her adult life. She sells her splendid mixed-media works at various local galleries and to her friends and neighbors at Azalea Trace. “The beauty of this place is how much care and kindness are all around.”

Evelyn has a big voice. A soprano, classically trained, she has been a composer, an author, a singer, and the conductor of the Delaware Symphony. In her ninth decade, she can still bring down the house at Cokesbury Village.

Steve and EJ, Edgewater at Boca Pointe

Steve and EJ have an apartment full of the bright colors of EJ’s exquisite photographs. Since moving to Edgewater at Boca Pointe, they have enjoyed the extra time and space to capture spectacular scenery and celebrate the best of living. “We felt like we were already home here.”

Betty, Lanier Village Estates

Betty brings a lot of cheer to her early morning yoga practice at Lanier Village Estates. Maybe because she takes classes with friends she’s known since grade school, or maybe it’s all the new friends she’s met since moving to her new home. “Everyone is just wonderful here.”

Alan has felt so at home since moving with his wife to Tryon Estates, he’s trying to convince the birds to move in too. A former teacher and AT thru-hiker, Alan started making his beautiful birdhouses during COVID. Now he has a whole flock of fans, some with feathers, around the community. “I love it here because it’s so friendly!”

Gail and Mary sing in perfect harmony. Since moving into Normandy Farms Estates, Gail’s dulcimer conjures sweet sounds of old folk ballads and traditional tunes as their voices delight their friends and neighbors.

George knows all about the sweet life. Since retiring to The Evergreens, honey has been a big part of his daily routine. As resident beekeeper, he tends to the colony, grows flowers, and puts together spectacular arrangements for his friends and neighbors. “The Evergreens has brought together such a diverse cross-section of residents. I really enjoy getting to know all my neighbors.”

Peggy, Matthews Glen

Peggy loves a surprise that brightens someone’s day. That’s why she collects rocks, paints them, and leaves them on her neighbors’ doorsteps at Matthews Glen. Since moving in, she’s found ample opportunity to enjoy herself and make each day special, thanks in part to her wonderful new friends. “It's a very active, vibrant community. There’s always something to enjoy.”
