When Reba Abbott moved into her one-bedroom apartment at Southampton Estates this spring, she knew the importance of taking the leap. After working for years at a continuing care retirement community, she understood the value of planning ahead. She had toured communities for nearly a decade, waiting until the timing and location felt right.

Today, just a few months after moving in, Reba says she has no regrets—only reassurance that she made the right decision.

Having worked at a similar continuing care retirement community, Reba knew what to look for when comparing communities. While many offered attractive amenities, one feature at Southampton Estates immediately stood out.
"The one thing that made me decide right away was the fact that you pay the same monthly fee even if you need medical," Reba said. "I could hardly believe that because most places don't do that. That's the best part."

Love at First Tour
Although she had visited Southampton Estates for information, Reba wasn't expecting to reserve an apartment that day.
During a tour with her daughter, Community Relations Director Ann White showed her one of the new Freedom apartments, part of Acts Simplified Living.
"I knew immediately—that's the one I want," Reba recalled.
Its location was another bonus, conveniently situated near the fitness center and pool. Her daughter was surprised by how quickly Reba made her decision.
"She said, 'I thought I was coming for information, not going to reserve a place!'" Reba said.
As someone who lives alone, Reba knew a one-bedroom apartment perfectly fit her lifestyle. She said,"I don't entertain or cook much, so I didn't need a large kitchen or extra rooms."
She especially appreciated the apartment's thoughtful design. What was intended as hobby space quickly became the perfect home office.
Discovering That Less Really Is More
Like many people preparing to downsize after decades in one home, Reba wondered whether she'd miss having more space. It only took a casual conversation with a Southampton Estates resident to change her perspective.
"I was touring a one-bedroom with a den, and the resident said, 'Less is more.' It just hit me because she was right. As a single person, I don't need extra space," Reba said.
After living in the same home for 40 years, downsizing meant letting go of decades of belongings. "You accumulate a lot of clutter," she said. "If something has special memories, take a picture of it. You don't need it sitting in front of you."
Now she laughs that she can hardly remember what she gave away.
Trading Home Maintenance for Freedom
Leaving behind the responsibilities of homeownership has been one of Reba's favorite parts of living at her new community.
"When my friends complain about replacing siding or keeping up with their homes," she said, "I just bite my tongue. I never have to worry about it."
Instead of spending weekends maintaining a house, Reba spends her time enjoying everything Southampton Estates has to offer.
While Reba loves her Freedom apartment, she says home extends far beyond her front door. "This whole community is my home, not just this apartment," she said. Reba stays active with fitness classes, ukulele lessons she just took up, brain health programs, as well as off-campus hobbies like singing with the Bucks County Women's Choir.
What surprised Reba the most was how quickly she made friends after moving in.
"Every January, February and March were difficult in my old home. It was cold, I didn't get out much, and I didn't see many people," she said. Living in a vibrant community like Southampton Estates gives Reba countless opportunities for socializing and entertainment are right outside her front door.
Advice for Others Considering the Move
When friends ask about her experience, Reba encourages them not to wait until circumstances force a decision.
"I tell my friends, no matter what you choose, you have to plan ahead and not wait for a crisis," she said. "That came from working at a similar continuing care retirement community. You need to have a plan."
Her son at first was concerned she moved in 'too soon' and asked if she felt sad about leaving the family home. "Not at all," Reba told him. "I was ready, and I have no regrets. I absolutely made the right decision."
For Reba, moving into her Freedom apartment wasn't about giving something up. It was about everything she gained: exciting opportunities to enjoy, peace of mind for her future, the freedom from home maintenance, and a welcoming community that truly felt like home.
