Laurel Lake Music Society at Tryon Estates

Laurel Lake Music Society at Tryon Estates

The Laurel Lake Music Society founded in 1999. Current President: Larry Swabb

Mission:
To provide high quality music programs by distinguished artists for the enrichment, education and entertainment of all residents, to promote and support music education in the schools, and to encourage interest and participation in and support of musical activities throughout the community.

Concerts:
Approximately eight concerts are offered each year -- offering a variety of music and all types of instruments. All are broadcast on Tryon Estates' Channel 15 and recorded, but the best way to enjoy good music is to attend the live performances in the Auditorium. Recordings are available for purchase or can be checked out from the Library.

Music Education:
Music Appreciation Hour features recorded and live lectures and demonstrations on a variety of subjects on the 4th Monday evening at 7:30 in the Auditorium. Music education in the schools is supported by giving small grants for supplies and instruments to public school teachers in Polk County and the Landrum, SC areas, and by obtaining contributions of used instruments for the schools from the community.

Scholarships: The granting of scholarships to the 4-week summer Cannon Music Camp at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC is a major activity. Competition is open to students in Polk County and the Landrum area, ages 14 to 18 in grades 8 through 12. The number of Laurel Lake Music Society scholarships to be awarded depends on the funds available from contributions from residents. In 2008, there were nine scholarships awarded; I believe only 6 or 7 in 2009.

Funding:
The Music Society receives no money from ACTS, but Tryon Estates gives great support by providing meals and lodging for visiting artists, refreshments for post-concert receptions, and food and service for the annual Gala.

Contributions:
The Music Society is a 501(c)3 organization and all contributions are tax-deductible. Gifts are strictly confidential and known only to the President and Treasurer who keep accurate records and follow IRS regulations.
